Depression is not an unavoidable state of mind, is a chemical condition you can change by yourself!
Have you ever heard the phrase: “I am too busy to think about my problems” or have you ever wonder why people do some jogging before going to work if they can sleep a little more instead? What is the hidden reason behind the working persistence of workaholics? There must be a good reason to do such strange things, don’t you think?
Depression is a chemical condition inside our brain, therefore it depends on some chemical substances. The most important of those is serotonin (or 5-HT), a neurotransmitter produced by the brain. Low levels of serotonin are related with mental diseases like schizophrenia, children hyperactivity or autism, and depression. Another important fact is that serotonin is used by the brain to produce melatonin, a hormone which controls our sleeping cycles. Serotonin starts raising at afternoon so the brain can produce enough melatonin to encourage a sleepy state, and keeps at high levels along the night, then diminishing as the sunrise comes. That is the reason why sleeping normally and waking up completely rested depends on normal changes of serotonin, which besides controls the levels of stress hormones such as Cortisol, GH and Norepinephrine, which are believed to play an important role in depression.
It is not a surprise that low levels of serotonin would cause sleeping disorders, depression and feelings of sadness, low self-esteem and sometimes aggressiveness. Sounds familiar?
So, if you want to improve your mind state and feel better, just raise your serotonin levels!
There are some ways to accomplish this: first, you can be prescribed by a physician to use Prozac, Sarafem or Fontex, which are medicinal drugs that contain fluoxetine. This substance acts as an antidepressant inhibiting reuptake of serotonin inside the brain, in others words it causes serotonin to be present into the brain for a longer time before it is absorbed by brain cells, when its effects disappear. Note that fluoxetine doesn’t produce or makes the brain produce more serotonin, it prevents brain cells from reuptaking serotonin too fast so its effects last longer. This relieves depression because it is related with low levels of serotonin and other neurotransmitters like dopamine. It will make you feel better but it will take up to two weeks to feel some change in your mood and there are some side effects of using it, like feeling sleepy along the day, loss of libido, tension, insomnia, anxiety, etc.
The second way of getting those serotonin levels equalized is not widely known but it should be. It is related with the reason why people feel well after doing exercise or any strenuous activity. An intense body activity or relaxation through meditation, yoga, tai chi, -you name it- induces the brain to produce serotonin and others endorphins triggered by it, producing changes in your mood state. This combination brings about a feeling of well-being.
Then, if you get involved into exercising or any strenuous activity, for sure you will feel less sad and you will sleep better at night, conditions which almost unavoidably will diminish your depressive state of mind. You can accomplish it by a very natural way: just by exercising or by relaxing! Just take a fast walk, do some jogging or aerobics, run, swim, dance... or relax by any known method like meditation, yoga, tai chi … anything you know to get involved into intense activity or relaxing, start to get tired and at the same time less weary or anguished. Or better than that, alternate one day of high activity and one day for using whatever relaxing method you know and start to feel alleviated at the same time you are doing something healthful for your body and your mood.
The third method is to eat foods which contain Tryptophan, the amino acid used by the brain to synthesize serotonin. You could think that just by consuming food containing serotonin would fix the problem, but one fact is that you can’t eat or drink serotonin to get into your brain, because it won’t pass the hemato-encephalic barrier, which is a limit for some substances to enter from the blood stream into the brain.
Any serotonin present into your brain must be synthesized from Tryptophan, which is an essential amino acid, contained in foods like turkey, Flaxseeds and Flax oil, fish like salmon, sardines and others rich in Omega 3: corn, rice, soybean and its derivatives like soy milk, soybean meat and tofu, whey protein and other milky products.
Other Tryptophan rich foods are nettle tea, bananas, chocolate, oats, pecans, pineapple, avocado and walnuts. Coffee offers help too, but if it is consumed moderately. Curiously, almost all those foods are healthy, and if you eat them while you are exercising and relaxing, you will be improving at the same time your mood and your health.
Of course this doesn’t mean that the more you consume this food, the more happy you will feel, but this will stabilize your serotonin levels and therefore you will sleep better and feel less sad and more under control.
So, don’t forget this: feeling down is a chemical condition into your brain, and therefore you can manipulate that condition at your will. Your condition depends on the levels of some substances into your brain, being serotonin the most important of all, which depends ultimately on what you eat and what you do along the day. It is as simple as that! Eat foods that help to equilibrating the serotonin levels into your brain, and do exercise or some relaxation each day, and start feeling better. And don’t forget this simple fact:
Serotonin is Key!
Any of these could be the solution to your sadness.
